The sea turtle population is shrinking fast, and as per the World Wildlife Conservancy they might even go totally extinct by the year 2050.
Now, you’re sure to wonder what it has to do with lighting or lamps as we’re talking about here.
You see, the declining turtle population has much to do with the way we’ve been lighting our coastline so far, i.e., with traditional lighting materials.
While other factors like climate change and warming sea water are also to blame for the crisis, we can’t overstate how a change in lighting systems and shift to LED turtle lamps can help preserve sea turtles.
But how exactly do regular lighting materials affect sea turtles?
Sea turtles have throughout their history of existence come to the seashores for nesting, and to that end they’re guided by natural moonlight. Thereafter, both mother turtles and their hatchlings use the reflections of the moon to get back to the ocean.
It is this process which gets disrupted by artificial lighting, as the turtles mistake the lights for moon, get disoriented, and end up in the cities. And since turtles are away from their natural habitat, they’re at the risk of dehydration and even death.
So how do LED turtle lamps make a difference?
Well, LED turtle lamps, or even non LED turtle friendly lighting for that matter use long wavelength lights of above 590 nanometers. These lights are not visible to sea turtles, but are visible to the human eye.
As such, these lighting materials ensure that sea turtles are no longer distracted from their natural path.
The result: nesting sea turtles lay their eggs on safe beaches, and upon hatching both female turtles and their hatchlings make their way back to the sea safely.
The final word
The threat to sea turtles is real, the reason why we need to act now to help protect these endangered species.
And with turtle friendly LED lamps you can do so in a cost-efficient way, as LEDs consume 90 percent less electricity than regular lights.
